The Year We Obsessed Over Identity

The above article, “The Year We Obsessed Over Identity,” talks about the incident that captured the media's attention and raised questions about gender, race, and identity. Rachel Dolezal, who was appointed to become president of the NAACP, got the media's attention because of her race. She was biologically white but chose to live life as a Black person. This raised lots of questions about racial identity. The story about Caitlyn Jenner has raised many questions about gender identity. Donald Trump's campaigning for the 2016 U.S presidency has raised questions about people's identity or nationalism.

I think this article is important because though the U.S. represents the land of liberty, many minority groups still feel like they are living in an oppressive regime. For example, minority African-Americans do have equal rights and freedom but they are the more likely group of people to become victims of police casualties. In addition, transgender, lesbian, and gay people are still being banned from entering or getting service from public places. This article shows the problems this country and the world are facing, so we can find solutions that can benefit everyone.

In class we read about how gender, race, media, and identity help create a culture, and this article discusses the people's view about gender, race, media, and identity and how they’re affecting the culture.
